Oftentimes the best relationships start out as friendships—at least that was the case for Amanda Seyfried and Thomas Sadoski. The couple started out as co-stars on stage, but since then, their bond has blossomed into a beautiful marriage complete with two children, a whole bunch of animals, and a lot of love. Even though the pair is famously private, they’ve shown a few snapshots of their life along the way. From their lowkey wedding to life on their farm, here’s a closer look at Amanda Seyfried and Thomas Sadoski’s relationship.
- Amanda and Thomas first met in May 2015, and they started dating officially in March 2016.
- The couple got quietly engaged in September 2016 before eloping in California on March 12, 2017.
- Less than two weeks later, on March 24, 2017, Amanda and Thomas welcomed their first child together, a daughter named Nina. In September 2020, Amanda gave birth to their son, Thomas Jr.
- The couple celebrated their fifth wedding anniversary in March 2022.
May 2015: First Meeting
Amanda and Thomas first met in May 2015 while starring together in the off-Broadway play, The Way We Get By. Even though the duo played love interests in the show, their relationship was purely platonic. Amanda told Porter magazine that while Thomas helped her when she had panic attacks on-stage (Amanda was diagnosed with OCD when she was in her early 20s), he “never flirted, never disrespected his wife.” At the time, Thomas was married to casting director Kimberly Hope and Amanda was dating actor Justin Long. Amanda said it was Thomas’s respect for Kimberly that, later down the line, made her think she could marry him.
November 2015: Reunited as Costars
Six months later, Amanda and Thomas were reunited for the film, The Last Word. The pair once again played love interests, this time at the request of Amanda. Thomas had recently divorced from his ex-wife, Kimberly, while Amanda and Justin had split in September.
March 2016: Officially a Couple
Sparks were clearly flying between the pair because, in March 2016, it was confirmed that Amanda and Thomas had taken their romance off-set and were officially a couple. “It was amazing,” Amanda said in her Porter interview about getting together with Thomas. “It felt healthy and freeing and clean. We can tell the story without any guilt.”
September 2016: Amanda and Thomas Are Engaged
Half a year after their relationship was confirmed, Amanda and Thomas got engaged on her farm in Stone Ridge, New York. The news broke in September 2016 after the Mamma Mia! star was spotted wearing a slim gold band on her left ring finger while walking her dog, Finn, in New York City.
“It was a quiet moment,” Amanda told Vogue Australia of her engagement for the magazine’s February 2017 cover story. “I’m not very romantic: I’m quite practical.” She added that her engagement ring doesn’t even include a gemstone. “I’ve been buying diamonds for years for myself and the last thing I wanted was for a man to buy me another diamond,” Amanda explained. Instead, she purchased her minimal engagement ring from a vintage jeweler in Portland, Oregon.
November 29, 2016: A Baby on the Way
Two months after their engagement news, Amanda announced that she was expecting during a press launch for Givenchy's Live Irrésistible fragrance. This pregnancy marked not only her first child, but Thomas’s as well.
February 2017: An Eager Mom-to-Be
A little over a month ahead of her due date, Amanda gushed about how thrilled she was to be starting a family with Thomas. "I've never been excited by anything more in my life—and ready," she said.
March 12, 2017: Casual California Elopement
At nine months pregnant, Amanda married Thomas during a private ceremony in Topanga, California. “I really wanted to have rings on in the hospital,” she told Porter magazine. “What if something goes wrong, and he’s not legally my husband?” The celebration was reflective of the couple’s under-the-radar style, with Amanda foregoing flowers and wearing a simple dress from Free People. The couple also ditched the idea of a reception and instead, just grabbed brunch together at a neighborhood café called Cheebo.
Thomas announced the wedding news during an appearance on The Late Late Show with James Corden saying: "We eloped. We just took off into the country with an officiant and, just the two of us, we did our thing.” He added that the ceremony was “beautiful” and it was “everything that it should be.”
March 24, 2017: Nina Sadoski Seyfried Is Born
Just over a week after their intimate elopement, Amanda gave birth to the couple’s first daughter, Nina, on March 24, 2017. Amanda said she was in labor for 24 hours, per an interview on Dr. Berlin’s Informed Pregnancy Podcast in June 2017. Despite the lengthy birthing experience, Amanda said she “felt really excited, and really safe, and really lucky” that both she and her daughter were healthy.
While on The Late Late Show prior to the birth of his daughter, Thomas said he was “more excited” about becoming a father than he’s ever been about anything in his life.
August 7, 2019: Amanda Discusses Having More Kids
In an interview with PEOPLE, Amanda opened up about wanting more children…eventually. "I just happened to get pregnant," she said, noting that her first pregnancy was a surprise. “I want to get pregnant again, but I’m not ready just yet to have a second. I would like my daughter to be in school and then have my own time with a new baby.”
June 25, 2020: Philanthropic Mission
Amanda and Thomas have long since been involved with philanthropy and welfare. In fact, their first public outing as an engaged couple took place back on September 28, 2016, when they attended a reception for the nonprofit organization No Kid Hungry.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, the couple got involved with War Child, an international organization that provides assistance to children in areas experiencing conflict. The couple appeared alongside other actors in a PSA urging viewers to show their support. "I think any parent, all parents, should be able to relate to the suffering of innocent children," Thomas told PEOPLE on July 1, 2020. "It's just something that's deeply, inherently part of who we are—that we want to protect our little ones."
August 13, 2020: Farm Life
Even though Amanda had been living on her Stone Ridge farm (complete with chickens, horses, goats, and a donkey) for most of her working life, she opened up about residing there with her family—including her mother—during an appearance on the YouTube Series Molner's Table in August 2020.
"She's our nanny," Amanda said of her mother Ann who lives with her. "My life is awesome because she is the third parent for us. I am so lucky—I know I am … So when my daughter gets up, she either comes in our room, or she goes downstairs. And if we're still sleeping it's great, 'cause she can hang out with my mom. She wakes up early."
September 28, 2020: Baby #2 Has Arrived
After keeping her second pregnancy a secret from fans, Amanda and Thomas confirmed the birth of their son, Thomas Jr., on September 28, 2020. The couple shared the news—plus their baby’s first photo—in a statement to INARA and War Child US.
"Since the birth of our daughter 3 years ago our commitment to the innocent children that are so brutally affected by conflict and war has been a driving force in our lives,” the caption on the War Child US’s Instagram post reads. “With the birth of our son the work of INARA and War Child has become our North Star."
April 16, 2021: Amanda Jokes About Not Having More Children
During an April 2021 appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Amanda mentioned another baby might not be in the cards for her and Thomas. She told Stephen that raising two children is “the hardest” and jokingly ask him to remind her “not to have another baby.” Amanda continued by saying she would “definitely” do a third Mamma Mia! movie but definitely wasn’t as sure about having a third child.
October 24, 2021: Amanda Discusses Her Difficult Second Delivery
A year after giving birth to her son, Amanda shared the details of his delivery at an A Mouthful of Air screening on October 24, 2021. "I had something that went wrong with my second birth,” she told PEOPLE. “The baby was okay but it was tricky and it was painful and it didn't have to happen, and it did so it added an extra level of trauma … It was a very physical thing, and it was a spinal thing, but I'm okay."
March 12, 2022: Five Years Married
Amanda and Thomas celebrated their fifth wedding anniversary in March 2022. Amanda marked the milestone with an Instagram post showing a photo of them now, along with a photo from their wedding day. In true, to-the-point Amanda style, the caption reads: "Five f**king years."
