Once upon a time, wedding signage was as simple as two last names and perhaps an arrow or room designation. Now, bold, beautiful signs steal the show. They can be a fun design element to delight guests, as well as a festive backdrop for photos and a way for a couple to show their personality. “Neon signs are an easy way to add a fun and personalized touch to your wedding,” says Michelle Angelosanto, event designer at Modern Rebel in Brooklyn, New York. Between “custom or pre-made, there's no shortage of options to fit your style,” she continues, adding that many couples choose to have their names in neon, while others opt for a witty slogan.

Lia Bancroft, owner of luxury wedding planning firm Lia Bancroft Events in Boston, Massachusetts, echoes Angelosanto’s sentiment that neon signs can be a nice way to set the mood on your wedding day. “Whether it's your new last name, a fun saying, or something that is ‘so you,’ a neon sign can become a focal point over your bar or on a backdrop in front of which guests can take fun photos,” she says, noting that you can repurpose the sign in your home after the wedding.

As for where to place the sign for the biggest impact? Likely wall-mounting is the way to go. “Signs can often be hung from the wall, but make sure you check on your venue's policies and hanging points,” urges Sarah Narcus, owner of Olio Event Space in Peabody, Massachusetts. “Alternatively, smaller signs might be propped against a bar or wall, or could be hung from a stand or on a table.”

Denniston urges sign purchasers to keep in mind that true neon signs can be somewhat costly (depending on where they are sourced) and that many of the options you can find on places like Amazon are actually LED lights made in a "neon" style. “There is nothing wrong with this—it's just something to keep in mind as you make your purchase,” she says, elaborating that she has had “much success” with the SELICOR shop on Amazon, bearing in mind that this is an LED light-up sign. “You can choose your color, size, and length so it is completely customized for you. It arrives in a well-packaged box so the contents are fully protected—and it's plug and play from there!” adds Denniston.

A word for the neon wise: “Today, many neon signs aren't actually made of neon,” says Narcus. “They are almost always LED made to look like neon, which makes them safer, lighter, cheaper, and easy to operate. They also need power or a strong battery pack that can last for 10+ hours,” she continues, noting that this Etsy shop is a great option for those looking to add some illumination to their wedding ceremony or reception.  Choose from a variety of colors, font, and sizes to make your dream neon sign and take comfort in knowing the wedding sign comes with a power adapter, plug, and the option of receiving screws or hinges for mounting and a dimmer or a remote controller.

What to Look For in a Neon Sign

  • Something that isn't too bright: Bancroft advises avoiding a neon sign that is too bright. “Many of the signs come with dimmers or options for less brightness,” she notes. “The reason being is that bright white lights get washed out in photography, and that is the point of you having it!”
  • Simple installation: What good is a neon sign if you or your wedding planners can’t electrify the room when it comes party time? “If you are planning to display your light-up sign at your wedding, be sure to plan ahead how it will be affixed or displayed and that it will be close enough to an outlet for power,” says Alexandra Denniston, owner and lead planner of Eventlightenment Planning in Newport, Rhode Island. Her insider tip: If you opt for a boxwood wall to display your sign, you can attach it fairly easily with small, clear zip ties. Angelosanto comments that many venues won't let you nail into the wall, so it's important to look over the finer details of assembly for your sign. “Avoid anything that requires a permanent fixture or is too heavy. Look for a sign that is light and can be hung with something temporary like Command Strips,” she says, adding that you can also get a sign that can sit on a tabletop, like this add-on item from Brite Lite Neons.
  • The appropriate zize: When searching for a neon sign, you'll need to make sure the size is appropriate for the space you intend it to place it, advises Bancroft, who stresses that you'll also want to make sure it can easily be hung and comes with holes in the backboard or hanging supplies. Like Bancroft, Angelosanto urges clients to consider the scale and location of your neon wedding sign. “If it'll be a backdrop to your sweetheart table or photo booth, then it should be at least two-to-three feet wide.” she says. “Always make sure that this special decor item fits the space that you are displaying it in. Neon Yard has tons of customization options and will ensure your sign fits perfectly.”
  • A simple design: When in doubt, keep it simple (a good motto for life, too). “When thinking about a neon sign for your wedding, avoid having too many colors and fonts,” says Narcus. “Neon signs are bright and fun, but can be difficult to read when using too many clashing colors or font options. Instead, stick to one-to-two colors and one-to-two fonts in order to optimize the guest experience.”
FAQ
  • How Much Should a Neon Sign Cost?

If you want a neon wedding sign for your wedding, be sure to factor the cost into your budget as it may be more than you think. “Smaller, simple signs start at $100-$300, while larger custom signs can cost up to $800-$1,200,” says Angelosanto, noting cost depends on size and design complexity.

Affirming this, Bancroft states that neon signs can range from $200 to $1,000+, with factors affecting the cost including the size of the sign, the number of letters/words, and where you source the sign. “On the low end, you can find a sign online from a mass production store, or you can work with a custom sign maker for a high-end sign.”

  • Can You Rent Neon Signs?

With neon signs being on the pricier side, not everyone wants to make the splurge. As we mentioned previously, you might hang your neon wedding sign in your home after your big day which for some might make the sticker shock more worth it. Still, renting might be a better option, especially if you don’t have the space or interest in displaying your sign at home after your wedding “For couples who're interested in some neon flair but want to keep it cost-effective, there are rental shops like Lite Brite Neon that allow you to rent pieces by the hour,” says Angelosanto. “Plus, they handle installation and break down.” One less thing to worry about finding an outlet for and setting up before we walk down the aisle? Sign us up, folks.

  • Does a Neon Signs Have to Include Our Names?

No! “Don't be afraid to think outside the box,” counsels Angelosanto. You can get a cursive neon sign of your names, she says, but your neon sign “can be a giant lightning bolt because your love is electric and you connected over David Bowie on your first date” or whatever your heart desires. Angelosanto has also seen couples embrace displaying wry quotes on their neon sign like “Until Death.”
