He’s the littlest man in your wedding party with a very big job—the ring bearer! Tasked with carrying those precious pieces of jewelry down the aisle, he plays a major role on your wedding day. Whether you’re popping the question—Will you be my ring bearer?—or showing your appreciation for his participation, doing so with a gift is apropos.

Gift him something he can use on the big day and beyond, like a personalized water bottle or a pair of cool sunglasses that will make him feel all grown up. It also means that he’ll go home with a keepsake that reminds him of his important role, long after the event has passed.

A small toy or activity book is also a thoughtful gift because not only will he be excited to receive a new toy, he’ll have something to keep him busy during the not-so-exciting parts of the reception. And a personalized robe or pair of slippers is a sweet way to pamper the little guy after his big walk down the aisle.

Whether you decide to pop the question with a gift or show your gratitude with a toy, thoughtful, fun options are abundant out there for your ring bearer.

What to look for in a ring bearer gift

Keep in mind the age of the child and their interests. It's nice to have several small gifts if possible—one to "pop the question" and another gift for the big day. The ring bearer proposal gift can be as simple as a sweet card or baked good, while the wedding day gift is more practical and tailored to the events of the day (think sunglasses for a summer wedding or some fun activity books to keep him engaged throughout the day).

FAQ
  • Is it better to have a ring bearer box or ring bearer pillow?

While ring bearer pillows are the more traditional choice, many couples are opting for the ring bearer box as a way to carry and present the wedding rings. As a modern option, the box provides more security when carrying the rings down the aisle, particularly if you have a little one as the ring bearer.

It’s also easier to remove the rings at the altar since they will not be tied to the pillow. As a bonus, the box can become a keepsake jewelry box post-wedding!

  • What’s a good ring bearer proposal?

Proposing to your ring bearer can be a lot of fun because hey, he’s a kid! This means there’s a lot of room to be creative. Start by thinking about what your ring bearer likes. If he's got a sweet tooth, pop the question with a cupcake or sheet cake (with the big question iced in script on the top). Or, gift him something he can use at the wedding, like a pair of sunglasses or a cool pair socks—they'll get him pumped for the party.

  • How do I choose a ring bearer?

The roles of the ring bearer has changed over time, but some things have stayed consistent. "Ring bearers are usually between the ages of three and seven and are often chosen from the children of close friends or family," explains etiquette expert Anna Post. She advises that it's ok to have more than one ring bearer if there are multiple children you'd like to include in the procession.

"The ring bearer usually processes after the maid or matron of honor and before the flower girl, but if they are young they might walk together," says Post.

"Just remember to have the best man take the ring from the ring bearer first. If the child’s parent is in the wedding party too, it’s okay for him or her to stand with mom or dad, or to have mom or dad hold him or her if need be."
