What to Look for in Swim Coverups
Material
Presumably, if you need a swim coverup, you’re dealing with sunny, possibly breezy weather. As such, “I recommend a lightweight fabric that drapes nicely, like thin spandex, linen, or cotton gauze,” says West. “Mesh, crotchet, and sheer styles are great options, as they hug the body nicely and look slightly more elevated.”
Choi also loves these more textured styles for a bridal look. “If you are going for an all-white beach look, look for ways to add texture,” she recommends. “Whether that be a crochet caftan or a 3D applique, it will make your beach look feel elevated and more special.”
Level of Coverage
Firstly, how much coverage your coverup provides depends on how much your skin you’re comfortable showing, as well as which styles you personally prefer—but there are other factors to consider, says Choi. “This totally depends on what swimsuit you are wearing and what activities you have planned,” she explains. “Are you having lunch at the pool with extended family, where you want to be more covered up? Or are you on your honeymoon and on a private beach?
Lastly, the expert warns, “If you are planning a beach day BEFORE your ceremony, I would say the more coverage the better so you don't end up with unwanted tan lines on your wedding day!”
Color
There are no rules here—you can wear white if you want or not! “Don't feel like you have to stick to white,” advises Choi. “There are so many fun white base floral coverups that you can incorporate to your beach day as well as fun ways to add a pop of color. On the other hand, a white bathing suit can be a tough one to pull off for many, so maybe it's about opting for a colorful bathing suit and adding a bridal touch with a white coverup on top.” Up to you!
