What to Look for in a Wedding Guest Dress

The Wedding Dress Code

Unsure how to interpret the dress code for an upcoming wedding you’re attending? While there are so many different dress codes out there, weddings are often categorized as casual, semi-formal, or formal, with key location details providing even more detail on where wedding guest outfits should fall on the casual to formal spectrum.

For a casual dress code, think lowkey backyard wedding for example, no matter how casual the couple is talking, always avoid wearing anything you’d wear at home including jeans, shorts, t-shirts, sneakers, etc. If you’re looking to wear a dress, opt for a sundress or lightweight jumpsuit if pants are preferred. If it’s a cocktail/semi-formal wedding, avoid a gown and stick with a knee to midi length dress or dressy pants suit. Gowns are reserved for formal and black-tie weddings along with a tailored suit or tuxedo. Elegance is always key when attending a black-tie event, especially at an upscale venue.

The Season

As the seasons change, so does the dress code. Seasonal dress codes are typically guided by color and temperature. Color palettes span from pastel to bright in the spring and summertime and become deeper and more earthy in the fall and winter.

For a fall wedding, consider an autumnal color palette like deep shades of orange, yellow or purple. Pay close attention to the weather as fall can teeter between hot, sunny days and crisp, cool days as the season changes. What you might wear to an indoor wedding on a chilly fall day will be much different than your choice for an outdoor ceremony on a hot fall day.

Attending in the winter? Be sure to choose a dress or pantsuit that can be paired with a coat or warm shawl. Most venues will have a coat closet available during winter weddings so you don’t need to worry about keeping your warm layer with you.

As the flowers begin to bloom in spring, add floral prints into your spring wedding guest wardrobe, and look for colors you might see in a garden. The same goes for summer. Sunnier, more vibrant colors fit the feeling of the season without standing out too much.

The Color or Theme

First and foremost, follow the invitation. If it states that the couple is going for a dress code color, stick to the color. For example, white may be a typical color to stay away from but if the invitation explicitly states the couple is having a white party, that supersedes any rule about wearing white to a wedding.

Color not specified? Stick with seasonal color palettes and avoid wearing bold colors that will make you stand out amongst the crowd. A bright pink dress may work for an outdoor summer wedding, but would be too much of a statement at a winter wedding. On the flipside, if you know the wedding color palette is bright and whimsical, stick with fun colors instead of showing up in all black.

If you’re at a loss of what color to wear, take inspiration from the wedding website and invitation. These colors can typically give you an impression of the theme for the wedding. When in doubt, always go with something a little more subtle so you don't steal the show from the couple or the bridal party.

FAQ
  • What shouldn't I wear as a wedding guest?

Every wedding has a different dress code and what may work for some may not work for others. Many fashion experts will tell you not to wear red or any vibrant, eye-catching color that can take attention away from the couple. It’s best to stick to the dress code but if no colors are specified, what’s a good rule of thumb to stick to?

“To avoid a major faux pas in the States, avoid wearing the colors white, cream or blush unless the couple specifically notes this in the wedding invitation,” advises stylist Stacie Houlker. “If you’re traveling overseas for a wedding, do a quick search for funeral colors for the country and avoid it those at all cost.”

  • What accessories should I wear to a wedding?

Shoes are often the first accessory decision. A heel can add elegance to any look, but comfort is always important. You can’t tear up the dancefloor if you’re hobbling in pain from your stilettos. Search for a low heel that can provide more comfort while still putting the finishing touches on a formal outfit.

Jewelry adds a personal touch to any look. Dress up your outfit with the help of a shiny pieces like drop earrings or a bold necklace. Statement not your style? Try a more subtle accessory like a simple pair of pearl or diamond studs. And don't forget a clutch or other small purse to stash all your necessities. “[A purse is your] first and last line of defense for wardrobe malfunctions, quick hair changes and makeup touch-ups,” Houlker recommends. “Purse selections can change the look of an outfit in minutes.”

  • Can I wear the same dress to more than one wedding?

“The short answer is absolutely!” says Houlker. If you’re in the prime of wedding season, buying a new dress for each occasion may be the last thing you or your bank account wants. And who has room for all those dresses in their closet? Instead of buying multiple outfits, repurpose a dress you’ve already worn. When attending multiple weddings, especially ones where the guest lists overlap, there are a few ways to change your outfit and serve up a new look.

“The key to pulling this off is alteration,” suggests Houlker. “Changing the hemline from a maxi length to high-low is a simple fix. Converting a v-neck neckline to a strapless number is another easy fix.”

Accessories can also change the vibe of a look, especially if alteration isn’t an option between back-to-back wedding weekends. Take a dress from casual to more dressed up with the help of a higher heel or gold jewelry. Pair your dress with a shawl or jacket to give it a new look.
