Looking for a unique accessory to round out your wedding-day look? You're in luck: Carrie Bradshaw's (played by Sarah Jessica Parker) blue feather wedding headpiece—which she paired with her strapless Vivienne Westwood gown in the 2008 Sex and the City movie—is going up for auction. Though that wedding didn't come to be—Mr. Big (played by Chris Noth) ultimately stood his bride up for their New York City nuptials—Carrie's big-day ensemble is one of the most iconic and notable television and movie outfits to date, and her unique "something blue" accessory is what took the look to the next level.
According to People, Sotheby's will auction off Carrie's taxidermied Bird of Paradise headpiece beginning on August 31, 2023. Sotheby's website indicates that the headpiece dates back to the 1800s and was worn just twice: one as part of Carrie's bridal ensemble in the 2008 film and once more in And Just Like That as part of Carrie's Met Gala look. "From the moment the world caught a glimpse of Carrie’s ensemble, the iconic headpiece became one of—if not the most—memorable pieces that the beloved character ever [wore] as it perfectly embodies the bold and empowered style of her character,” Sotheby's writes.
Earlier this year, Danny Santiago, costume designer for And Just Like That, opened up to Today about the look and why it was so important to recreate Carrie's wedding look for the show's reboot. "People fell in love with that dress. It made a big impact [on fans]. Bringing it back changes the sentiment of what that dress meant. Carrie can repurpose it and replace it with the wonderful memory of wearing it to the Met ball.” Parker felt similarly, but she told People on June 22, 2023, that securing the wedding dress for the show was tough, as it was out of the country at the time. “We weren’t entirely sure we could get the dress back,” she admits. “It was in London and unearthing it was complicated—getting it through customs in time and then making sure, ‘Was this, in fact, the original dress?’ The color looked different.”
How much should interested buyers plan to spend on the headpiece? Because it's an auction, the final price will depend on interest, by Sotheby's expects that the unique accessory will sell for anywhere from $40,000 to $70,000. Other items that will be up on the auction block include a sweater and gown from Princess Diana, a black lace dress from Michelle Obama, and an evening gown worn by Kate Winslet.
