If you were invited to a wedding with a formal or black-tie optional dress code, you might be wondering what you're supposed to wear. The formal dress code can certainly feel confusing: it's not as casual or playful as your typical go-to cocktail dress, but it's also not as fancy as black-tie or white-tie attire.
“The biggest difference between a formal and informal dress is the length,” explains bridal stylist Kennedy Bingham. “Generally, a formal dress will be a longer length, as well as an elevated material. So instead of a spandex or polyester fabric, the same dress in a nice crepe or silk could add to the formality of a dress,” she said. For women, this means your formal attire could be floor-length gowns, sophisticated jumpsuits or pantsuits (a midi or tea-length dress can be appropriate in some cases) in an elegant fabric.

What to Look for in a Formal Wedding Guest Dress
- Style: If you were invited to a wedding with formal attire, pull out all the stops and wear something fabulous. There's a time and a place for easy breezy cocktail dresses, but this isn't one of them. While “formal” can mean a lot of different things, in general, look for a long, glamorous dress in an elegant fabric. You can also take this as an opportunity to add extravagant jewelry. “The fun part is: the more formal, the more accessories! It's hard to go over the top with a super formal theme,” said Bingham.
- Length: Longer hemlines are better for formal celebrations, so it's best to opt for a floor-length gown. “If you want to be safe rather than sorry, a chic, floor-length dress is always a good default,” said Bingham. While you can get away with a midi or tea-length number, be sure it's glamorous enough to fit the dress code. Additionally, a fancy jumpsuit would be lovely for those who are searching for something other than a dress. Skip out on anything with a short hemline, unless it’s been vetted or is on the fancier side.
- Venue: If you’re unsure about the dress code for a particular wedding, a look at the venue can give you insight into what you should wear. For example, an outside, garden wedding might mean choosing an ankle- or tea-length gown, as well as dressing for the weather. A five-star hotel venue gives you the go-ahead for going super formal. But when in doubt, ask. “I've seen beautiful, formal backyard weddings and I've seen really gorgeous, casual weddings held in cathedrals. I would pick what feels the most true to your personal style,” said Bingham. In general, it’s better to err on the side of caution, and dress “up” instead of down.
