Angela Viscount, a trainer, and Justin Pugh, a left guard for the Arizona Cardinals, met in New York City in late 2016 through a mutual friend who thought they’d be a perfect match (they were right). That Valentine’s Day, they hit it off on their first official date in Hoboken, New Jersey. Four years later, on February 6th, 2021, Justin popped the question on a beach in Miami—and the couple celebrated with their family at the Ritz Carlton.
Ange and Justin knew right away that they would be hosting a destination wedding. “We wanted everyone to enjoy an incredible tropical vacation at a beautiful resort all while watching us tie the knot,” Ange says. On a quick trip to Rosewood Mayakoba resort in Riviera Maya, Mexico, the couple fell in love with the friendly staff, dreamy villas, and upscale dining. “The moment we stepped onto the Mayakoba property, we knew it was where we wanted to get married,” Ange says.
Ange and Justin kicked off their wedding weekend with a welcome party at La Ceiba Garden & Kitchen, complete with an all-white dress code. The next day, on April 30, 2022, the couple’s 150 guests joined them on the Lagoon Lawn for their outdoor wedding ceremony and, later, at the property’s Aqui Me Quedo beachside restaurant for the reception.
This couple’s weekend was full of personalized details, from their wedding logo painted on the bottom of their villa’s pool to custom fans and piñatas for each guest. They hired planner Cydney Lundahl from Canvas Weddings and Events and found vendors all over Mexico and the United States to pull off their vision of a Hamptons-meets-Mexico welcome party, a timeless wedding ceremony, and a party-centric reception with tons of entertainment.
“We didn't want a fancy black-tie event. We wanted everyone to get dressed in their beach-iest most fashion-forward wedding attire, show up, and dance the night away,” Ange says. “I feel like we truly accomplished that with our wedding.” Considering they had fire dancers, a bounce house, fireworks, and ended the night in the pool, we'd have to agree. You won’t want to miss shot after epic shot by photographer Erich McVey.
Ange and Justin created a custom logo for their wedding weekend featuring their first initials. When they arrived at their villa, they found their logo painted on the bottom of the pool, which was a complete surprise. “It was so cool and got us so excited for the festivities to come,” Ange says.
The couple asked their guests to wear all white and join them at the resort’s La Ceiba Garden & Kitchen for their welcome party. Ange and Justin dressed in vibrant colors to stand out and match the décor. The bride chose a red and pink Bronx and Banco dress with gold Tom Ford heels, Cult Gaia earrings, and a braided hair look with rope, pearl, and flower embellishments. “The inspiration for my hair came from Jasmine Sanders' 2018 Met Gala look,” Ange says.
Justin wore a custom suit from Gentleman’s Playbook accessorized with woven loafers by Magnanni and a gold Rolex watch that Ange gave him as a gift. Woven lanterns were hung from the trees and colorful flower garlands swung from the bar. Some tables were topped with patterned linens while others were kept bare. The tablescape incorporated fresh fruits and vegetables, lanterns, maracas, and bold red, yellow, pink, and orange flowers in a variety of white vessels.
Guests were served custom coconut rum drinks branded with the couple’s logo and a traditional Mexican meal. From start to finish, the welcome party was everything they could have asked for: “The vibrant colors from the décor and flowers paired with the guests white attire looked so dreamy the moment we stepped into the garden,” Ange says.
As the party continued, it only got better: The couple brought out fire dancers to close out the evening.
The duo worked with Caroline Iverson to create their all-white embossed invitation suite that featured an image of a palm tree; it was finished with a vellum envelope and custom wax seal.
They gave guests welcome beach baskets with handmade Mexican shot glasses, custom stainless steel tumblers with their logo, custom stickers, survival kits of essentials, towels, custom playing cards illustrated with their dogs likenesses, a bottle of mezcal, and silk bandanas with their logo. They also customized newspapers with the itinerary for the weekend, complete with facts about their relationship. In each villa, they hung a custom piñata in the shape of a tequila bottle with their logo; they were filled with Mexican candy so guests could kick off the weekend with some fun!
On the wedding day, Ange got ready before the ceremony with her bridesmaids and her mom. They shared Champagne in matching pajamas while Ange wore a Dior bralette and brief set. For her big-day beauty look, the bride chose Hollywood waves with a middle part and glam makeup; she wanted to look like an elevated version of herself. “For the last three months leading up to my wedding, I was getting facials every other week from MD Skin Lounge," she says. "I switched between the Diamond Glow facial and the Hydrafacial and it definitely helped my skin texture tremendously."
Ange shared a first look with her mom, which ended up being one of the most special moments of the day. “I had been dreaming about it since I was a little girl and it was even more special than I could have imagined,” she says. Ange worked with Caroline to create a custom drawing of her, her mother, and her grandmother on their own wedding days standing side by side; it was the perfect gift for her mother "and had us both in tears," says the bride.
Ange chose her Galia Lahav gown nine months before the big day, but just two months prior, she was a guest at a wedding where the bride was wearing the exact same one. “I had a mini panic attack," she says. "I went to my dress store and told them I wanted to rework my entire gown to make it more custom." The atelier added sleeves and tulle, removed some embellishments, and ultimately made it completely custom for Ange. “At the time, everyone thought I was crazy changing it so close to my wedding but I was so happy in the end knowing no one else would have a dress like mine,” she says.
She accessorized with Carolina Wong pearl drop earrings and a locket with a picture of her grandmother in it that her aunt gave her on the morning of the wedding. “It was my 'something blue' and 'something borrowed' and meant so much to me knowing it was from my Mom-mom, who passed when I was younger,” Ange says. She went with a classic pink and white ombré almond shaped manicure to complete her look.
Justin wore a custom white bamboo suit by Elevee paired with cream suede loafers by Magnanni. He also wore his gold Rolex and a Cartier bracelet. He bought his barber, Edga Ayala from The Manor Barber Shop in Scottsdale, to Mexico for grooming prep—and finished up by spritzing on Angela’s favorite fragrance, Hermes Vetiver Tonka.
Ange and Justin shared their first look by the water. Justin arrived by boat and once he docked, he turned around to see his bride. “It was so fun to have him come in on a boat,” Ange says. “It was magical to say the least.” The couple shared some private time after the first look taking portraits.
The bridal party wore olive green Jenny Yoo dresses in a variety of shades and fabrics and held bouquets of cascade amaranthus, baby’s breath, and roses. Justin’s groomsmen donned tan linen suits and white button up shirts from Men’s Warehouse with brown woven loafers from ASOS. The couple also had a young flower girl and ring bearer, who stole the show during the ceremony playing with the rose petals on the ground. “Everyone loved it,” the bride says.
The couple’s ceremony took place on the edge of a lagoon, surrounded by tropical foliage. For the altar canopy and aisle décor, they went with a mix of neutral toned florals and greenery, including roses, lisianthus, hydrangeas, ranunculus, spray roses, orchids, dried baby’s breath, and eucalyptus. The ceremony benches were decorated with cascading baby’s breath and roses and the aisle was covered in white rose petals. Guests were given custom fans with the couple’s logo and individual cups of rose petals to toss at the end of the service.
Ange’s father, Tom, walked her down the aisle to an acoustic live version of Taylor Swift’s “Wildest Dreams.” The couple wrote their own vows and incorporated inside jokes, promises, and some intimate memories that had their loved ones in tears. “They were my absolute favorite part about our whole wedding,” Ange says.
Once they were pronounced husband and wife, Ange and Justin shared a kiss and recessed back up the aisle to Natalie Cole’s “This Will Be (An Everlasting Love).” Then they hit the beach for a few more pictures before joining their guests for the cocktail hour.
Attendees gathered around the pool for cocktail hour, where they were handed signature drinks in miniature glass bottles with custom labels as they arrived. Ange and Justin served "The Zona" as a nod to where they live in Arizona, "The York," named after where they met in New York, and "The Benny" as an homage to their dog. They hired a five-piece band for this part of the evening's entertainment.
At the reception, a custom structure was built on the beach with draped lighting to create the illusion that guests were dining under the stars. Large floral arrangements were hung overhead, incorporating the flowers seen at the ceremony with the added texture of dried elements.
“When looking at inspiration photos for my wedding, I always gravitated towards texture,” Ange says. “Different woods, fabrications, and stones for all of the table products were things I really wanted to bring in.” The couple selected metal components via their welcome signage, contrasting wood tables and chairs, velvet white napkins, gauze table runners, marble name tags, and printed thank-you notes on cheesecloth to incorporate various textures in the reception décor. The palm tree design that was seen on the couple’s invitation suite was customized on the dance floor for another special touch.
Ange and Justin made their grand entrance at the reception and quickly shared their first dance. Ange took a spin to James Taylor’s “You Got A Friend” with her dad and Justin danced with his mom to two songs—Louis Armstrong’s “What a Wonderful World” and the Bridgerton version of Kris Bowers’ “Material Girl.”
Ange changed into a Galia Lahav tailored pantsuit—complete with a sheer tulle corset, high-waisted satin trouser, a satin overskirt, and a metallic belt—for her second look. The couple then cut their tiered wedding cake, which was decorated with white flowers and white and blush tulle.
Justin changed into his second look for the after-party, which was a custom short sleeved button up by Elevee paired with black shorts and black Birkenstocks.
One of the couple’s favorite memories from the whole wedding weekend was watching the fireworks together. “I remember us both sitting there watching them go off and looking at eachother like, yes, we did it!” Ange says. “Then we danced the night away with our friends and ate s'mores popsicles, churros, cheesesteaks, and fries.” The couple also spent some time jumping in the bounce house they installed on-site for the after-party.
We wanted everyone to have the best time and seeing everyone up and dancing the night away was something we’ll never forget.
Ange changed into her final look of the night, a white mesh dress by PatBO, for the remainder of the after-party on the beach. The couple’s DJ kept everyone on their feet, and they even had a neon sign that read "Til Death Do Us Party" to set the vibe. “Throughout our entire party, no one sat down and both of us were so beyond happy about that,” Ange says. “We wanted everyone to have the best time and seeing everyone up and dancing the night away was something we’ll never forget.”
Ange and Justin ended the night by jumping in their pool—and remind couples to enjoy every step of the planning process. “It's so easy to get caught up in every little detail and stress over them, but in the end, if something goes wrong, it's okay,” Ange says. “Only you will know and the day will still be unbelievably magical because you're marrying the love of your life. Don't forget that!”
