George and Amal Clooney Reveal the Hilarious Gifts They Exchanged for Their 9th Wedding Anniversary

George and Amal Clooney just reached a huge milestone in their relationship: The Academy Award-winning actor and the barrister celebrated their ninth wedding anniversary on September 27, 2023. To commemorate the occasion, the couple chose to celebrate with a low-key evening at home and a gift exchange. When picking out a present for his wife, George decided to go the traditional route. Amal, on the other hand, bought her husband something more unconventional. As it turns out, neither spouse was particularly enamored with the present they received!

While speaking to Extra at the Clooney Foundation for Justice’s Albie Awards on September 28, 2023, George revealed what he gave Amal. “What is the gift? What is it you found out? It was clay,” The Descendants actor said. According to long-standing conventions, a willow or pottery are the typical items couples are supposed to buy when they hit the nine-year mark. “It wasn’t an exciting one,” Amal admitted. George clarified his choice. “Pottery for a ninth anniversary, so I gave her a pot,” he stated. Amal still maintained her previous opinion, calling the gift, “something not very exciting.” Amal also joked that the two of them will have to wait another 16 years until the traditional anniversary gift is anything impressive.

In another interview with Access, George shared the gift that his wife gave to him in return. Like Amal, George wasn’t very satisfied with the present. “She got me a robe that said ‘Hubby’ on it,” he said, jokingly. “It was almost too much.” Amal laughed and added that she didn’t think her gift would “become public knowledge.” She also noted that the two of them had “a pajama anniversary,” which explained her choice. George continued to lightly make fun of the clothing item. “It’s the end of everything, really: wearing a silk robe with ‘Hubby’ on it.” When the interviewer said she needed visuals, George laughed, “No, honestly. I can’t get it add of my head.”

All jokes aside, while speaking with Entertainment Tonight, George praised his wife for her work. “She inspires me in everything she does,” George gushed. Amal was clearly still in the mood to poke fun at her husband because when he asked his wife, “Do you feel like a power couple, my love,” she replied, “Not really.” On a more serious note, she explained that celebrating their ninth wedding anniversary the day before holding the Albie Awards was particularly special. “Well, we’re really happy,” she said. “This is our second Albies. We hope to do it every year, and it’s really an honor to be able to put on a stage tonight.” 

During their interview with Extra, George revealed more insight into their relationship. The two of them enjoy playing pickleball, but George noted that they won’t argue during a game. Why? “We don’t fight over pickle ball because it’d be so embarrassing to admit it on live television that you fight over the word ‘pickleball,’ you know what I’m saying?” he quipped.

For the second annual event, which honors brave defenders of justice, Amal channeled a blushing bride in a white Versace gown covered in rhinestone netting. The human rights lawyer shared the lowdown on the custom look with Vogue. Amal told the publication that she flew to Milan to work with the Versace team on designing the dress. “I actually had taken a sample from a simple beach dress that I have, and we worked from there,” she described of the process. “It’s fun. You can make your look an expression of your mood, but it definitely helps to have talented people, like their team at Versace.” She paired her ensemble with a rhinestone clutch, long diamond earrings, a cuff bracelet, and several rings. George opted for a classic black tuxedo for his look.
