Between glazed donut nails, lacquered lips, and 90s-inspired updos, Hailey Bieber has plenty of everyday beauty moments to emulate. So if you're a bride looking to achieve cool girl glamour on your big day, checking to see what the Rhode founder did for her own nuptials would be the right path to take—specifically her hairstyle choice.
Equal parts effortless, natural, and romantic, the beauty mogul sported a low bun twisted at the nape of her neck, which was fastened by two simple pearl pins. Barely-there wispy pieces of hair were also left out to add softness to the style, and, of course, a crisp center part was on full display (because Bieber is nothing if not perfectly on-trend).
The best part? If this easy, breezy style is a fit for your own wedding beauty vision, it couldn’t be simpler to recreate, even without a hairstylist. Ahead, we put together a step-by-step guide to achieving Hailey Bieber's wedding hair—plus, a few expert tips and product recommendations to help you along the way.
Meet the Expert
Devin Toth is a hairstylist at Salon SCK in New York City.
Step One: Prep
While Bieber’s style is an easy coif to achieve, getting the look is actually a two-day process, as you’ll want a second-day wash for a little grit and hold. What's more, depending on your specific hair type, you'll also have to pay attention to the products you use when prepping your mane for this style.
For instance, those with fine or thin hair should opt for a volumizing shampoo and conditioner, like R+Co Dallas Biotin Thickening Shampoo, while curlier, thicker hair types should consider something hydrating and nourishing, like Ouidad Advanced Climate Control Defrizzing Shampoo (which will also help to prevent any humidity-related frizz when styling).
Another tip: On the day of, right before styling, spray dry shampoo—like Kerastase Fresh Affair Dry Shampoo—throughout your roots for a little extra hold and to touch up any greasy strands from overnight.
Step Two: Form a Center Part
In a similar fashion to Bieber, you'll want your center part to be ultra-sharp in order to give the style a modern edge. To get a perfect part, hairstylist Devin Toth recommends using the point of a tail comb, like the Harry Josh Tools Carbon Tail Comb, to draw the line from your hairline to your crown. “Then brush the hair, on each side, downward towards the nape of your neck with a boar bristle brush,” he says.
A boar bristle brush will make the center part appear extra dramatic, but it will also flatten the sides a bit. Thus, Toth recommends raking your fingers through each side of your head as you pull the hair back into a ponytail. “This will give the sides a more lived-in look as opposed to plastered down" he shares.
Step Three: Fasten a Ponytail
Next, pull your hair back into a low ponytail at the nape of your neck. “Before you secure the ponytail with an elastic, set aside subtle, cheekbone-length wisps in front of each ear to soften the style,” notes Toth. “But remember, these are not full-blown tendrils, they are wisps," so be light-handed with what you leave out of your ponytail. Once you’re happy with the wisps, fasten the ponytail as securely as possible.
If you need a hair tie recommendation, Toth says Blax Snag-Free Hair Elastics are the strongest elastics on the market, which will be especially important if you have very thick hair.
Step Four: Twist Into a Low Bun
Once your low ponytail is in place, twist and coil it into a bun and secure it with simple bobby pins that match your hair color. If you have thick hair, divide the ponytail into two parts, twist each separately, and then coil those two twists together. “If the bun is too tight and clean, gently massage it with your fingers to pull it apart a bit,” adds Toth.
Step Five: Add Some Finishing Touches
Once your twist is exactly how you like it, garnish it with one or two pearl pins, or rhinestones depending on your day-of vibe. Jennifer Behr’s Perla Bobby Pin Set is a perfect match for what Bieber wore on her big day.
Last but not least, finish the style with hairspray. A strong-hold spray with flexibility will help keep the top part clean and in place the entire day, while still allowing the romantic wisps to float freely. Toth likes Shu Uemura Moya Hold Hair Spray to achieve this look.
“One thing that keeps this simple hairstyle interesting on Hailey Bieber is that she has a bright, Barbie blonde hair color with subtle depth at her roots,” says Toth. While this look will look stunning on any color, if you’re going for a true blonde dupe, “you could just barely grow your roots out leading up to the wedding," the stylist shares.
