From the multiple lemon-elderflower cakes that broke tradition to Idris Elba bringing the energy as the DJ, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s royal wedding reception—which was held on May 19, 2018—was absolutely unforgettable. One of the most special moments of the evening? The first dance. In a new trailer for their Netflix docuseries, Harry & Meghan, which was released on Saturday, December 10, 2022, the couple reminisced on the first time they hit the dance floor as newlyweds. “I just really wanted the music to be fun—even our first dance,” Meghan says in the clip.
Although swinging around the dance floor was definitely a highlight for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, Meghan admits she can never remember the name of the song they chose for this memorable moment. “I always get it wrong,” she shares. In the trailer, Meghan begins singing the lyrics to “Land of 1,000 Dances” by Wilson Pickett while the track plays in the background. “That was our first dance,” she reveals. “It was so fun. Just spinning like a whirlwind. It was so great.”
The new trailer for the final three episodes of the docuseries also features a photo of the couple from their reception at Frogmore Cottage. In the image, Meghan dons her iconic Stella McCartney reception dress with a halter top while Harry spins his new wife around in his classic tuxedo. Based on the image, it looks like the reception had a packed dance floor.
King Charles III hosted Meghan and Harry’s post-wedding celebration, which 200 of their closest friends and family members attended after the couple exchanged vows at Windsor Castle’s St. George’s Chapel. It was a star-studded affair with celebrities, such as George Clooney, David and Victoria Beckham, James Corden, Serena Williams, and Priyanka Chopra, in attendance. The party was filled with fun moments, including Corden and Elton John performing live, Williams playing beer pong, Clooney serving drinks, and the newlyweds sharing a funny and touching speech, according to People. "It was a huge dance party,” a source told the publication at the time. “Everyone was letting loose and had a blast. Just a fun night and not stuffy at all.”
The third episode of the docuseries, which aired on Netflix on December 8, 2022, reveals another detail that set the tone for the couple’s royal reception: their invitations. A photo of the card with a floral border reads, “Please join us for dinner and dancing to celebrate our wedding” in a black bolded font. The invitations reveal that the reception began at 7:30 p.m. in the Windsor Home Park. The couple signed it “Love, Haz & Meg xx.”
In the first volume of episodes, Harry and Meghan give viewers a deeper look inside of their relationship and their role as royal family members. The couple said that they wanted to create this series to tell their side of the story. “I’m not going to say that it’s comfortable, but when you feel like people haven’t gotten any sense of who you are for so long, it’s really nice to just be able to have the opportunity to let people have a bit more of a glimpse into what’s happened and also who we are” Meghan notes.
