Most brides-to-be host their bachelorette party on a trip to a quaint beach town or a happening city, but Robin Roberts and Amber Laign celebrated theirs on national television. On August 16, 2023, the Good Morning America co-anchor and her partner of 18 years commemorated their upcoming nuptials—which will take place next month—during a bachelorette party broadcasted on air. Roberts’ colleagues threw the bash, and some of their closest friends and family members attended, including Food Network star Carla Hall, ABC news broadcaster Diane Sawyer, CBS News anchor Gayle King, and Roberts’ sister Sally Ann. Not to mention, viewers around the world tuned in to celebrate the future brides.
Palm trees and a blue sky backdrop transformed the ABC morning show into a bachelorette party-worthy destination. “As you can see, we have decked out our set for Robin and Amber’s bachelorette party,” Good Morning America co-anchor Lara Spencer noted before the couple entered the room. Some of Roberts and Laign’s family members also eagerly awaited the couple's arrival. Many of them were dressed in matching blue button-down shirts with patches featuring the letters “RA,” as a reference to the couple’s first initials, and white pants. Others wore colorful dresses.
Then, actress Niecy Nash-Betts signaled for the couple to join the festivities. “Let’s get them out here,” she exclaimed. “Robin and Amber, please come check it out. We know that Key West is your happy place, so we threw a party with a beach theme.” The engaged pair walked out on set while the crowd cheered them on. Both were clad in their bridal whites, with Roberts in a white blazer, white lace pants, and heels, while Laign sported a white jumpsuit. Both completed their ensembles with silver sashes engraved with the words, “Bride to Be.”
After greeting and hugging their guests, Spencer asked Laign how she was feeling. “Amber, will you tell everybody, how does it feel to see your bride tribe together to celebrate you,” she asked, to which Laign responded, “Amazing. This is just incredible.” Roberts chimed in, “This is wonderful." She proceeded to spot a few familiar faces and called out their names. According to an earlier segment, Roberts and Laign arrived to the Times Square set via the “Bachelorette Express,” with Nash-Betts as the driver. “This is going to be a wild ride, Robin,” she said. “We’ve got your sister Sally Ann and some of your closest friends and even En Vogue.”
The rest of the bachelorette party was filled with music and games. Roberts and Laign played the “Nearly Newlywed Game” and enjoyed mocktails. Then, girl group En Vogue played a handful of ballads while the future brides and their guests danced around the set. At the end of the celebration, Tommy DiDario, fitness influencer and Good Morning America anchor Gio Benitez’s husband, popped out of a three-tier, life-sized gold wedding “cake” surrounded by confetti.
Roberts and Laign first met when they were set up by mutual friends to go on a blind date. Both of them said they had canceled several planned first dates with one another over the course of the year before meeting in person, according to ABC 7. “Our two friends, my friend Alex, her friend Bert, finally said, ‘Enough, you two are going to meet,’” Laign recalled. Thanks to the nudge from their friends, Laign was swept off of her feet the first time she saw Roberts. “I remember just walking up, and she’s beautiful, and she took my breath away, and she still does,” she said. Roberts had initially agreed to grab drinks, but she previously told her friend that if the date were going well, she would kick him under the table since their mutual friends also attended the outing. “Within a few minutes, I was kicking my friend Bert under the table,” Roberts admitted. “And we asked if they would like to stay for dinner, and her friend couldn’t stay, but [Laign] did.”
At the time, Roberts was just beginning her role at Good Morning America, so the two of them developed a routine where they could see each other regularly. “I’d cut through Times Square, and Sam [Champion] would be doing the weather,” Laign recalled. “And when Sam would do the weather, Robin would walk over to the windows, and she’d wave, and we would time it. It just put a little extra pep in my step. I don’t know how we finally got the timing down, but that went on for quite a while.” Now, 18 years later, the two are getting ready to say “I do,” and their wedding is scheduled to take place next month.
