Saying yes to a marriage proposal should be the easiest part of getting engaged. But for many, the element of surprise comes with some bizarre reactions. Swearing like a sailor, bursting into hysterical bouts of laughter, or erupting in screams are just some of the ways brides-to-be have answered the question, “Will you marry me?”
If you're looking for a laugh, or just want to know exactly how not to react to a marriage proposal, read on for some of the wildest stories we've seen on the internet!
Fainting
This proposal has racked up almost 3 million views on YouTube because the reaction is so unbelievable. After being blindfolded and led into what she thought was a surprise birthday party, this bride-to-be was so stunned by her fiancé’s proposal that she fainted. “He proposed to me and I fainted. Why? I have no idea, but I felt like an idiot,” she confessed in the video’s notes.
Cursing
Jordan Lawrence’s fiancée eventually said yes, but first, she had a couple of curses to get out of her system. “Holy f*king ballsacks!” she exclaims before accepting his offer with a more family-friendly “Oh my God! Oh my God! Yes! Of course, I’ll marry you!”
Screaming
Moviegoers got an earful when Michael Alexander Jr. and Danielle Smith got engaged at Stars Cinema in Eldorado, Ark. When Michael decided to get down on one knee behind Danielle while she paid for some snacks at the concession stand, Danielle answered with a scream. After yelping, hopping around, and collapsing with joy against a candy case, she finally accepted.
Can’t Stop Laughing
Romance can be hilarious. Or at least it was to Julie, who couldn’t keep it together when her fiancé popped the question using his Pontiac. When Julie closed the hood of his maroon car to see “Will You Marry Me?” she couldn’t contain herself. “Where the—hahaha!” she says with a laugh once she realizes what’s going on. “Oh my God! Are you kidding me?” she asks before answering with another laugh and an enthusiastic “yes!”
Heart Palpitations
When George Begalla proposed to Katie Woodford, he didn’t realize popping the question would actually take her breath away. The couple hiked to the top of Phoenix’s Camelback Mountain, where George went for the big ask. “I had this full speech I had planned, but because I was struggling so hard just to get up there, my long speech turned into, ‘I love you so much, will you marry me?’” he told Fox 10.
But it wasn’t so easy for Katie. “I was like, yes! I was really surprised and everything, then my face started to tingle, and my hands started locking up and my legs started cramping real bad, and I was like, ‘I can’t make it down,'” she explained. George called 911 and a helicopter was dispatched to help Katie. Firefighters began treating Katie before whisking her off the mountain to a hospital. “It didn’t go exactly as planned, but it’s been quite the experience. I wouldn’t change for anything. It’s a good story,” George said.
He Vomits
Forever is no match for motion sickness—or at least that's what video journalist Darrell Hamilton Jr. found out when he popped the question to his girlfriend of two years, Rheanna Faye. Darrell planned to surprise Rheanna with a romantic plane ride, but his queasiness surprised them both. While the couple admires the in-flight view, he asks Rheanna, “Will you marry me?” before handing her the ring and proceeding to get sick. Despite Darrell’s weak stomach, she said yes.
Throwing Apples
Miranda McCallion's first reaction to her boyfriend's marriage proposal wasn't exactly a serious one. When Randy Wente got down on one knee and asked: "Will you marry me?" McCallion thought it was all a joke. So much so that she literally threw a half-eaten apple at Wente's face! However, she quickly realized that Wente wasn't kidding, prompting her to tackle him to the ground with a giant hug. She, of course, said yes, but not without apologizing for the apple to his head!
Proposing, Too!
When Jessa Gillaspie proposed to girlfriend Becky McCabe at the Memphis Zoo, she thought she would hear the typical excited "yes!" followed by a warm embrace. Instead, she got a proposal from McCabe herself! Turns out, both women were planning on proposing that day, but Gillaspie beat her girlfriend to the punch. After Gillaspie got down on one knee, McCabe immediately grabbed her purse and pulled out an engagement ring! Who would have thought they would have the exact same proposal plan? Too cute!
Slapping the Ring
For this couple, a playful reaction turned into a disaster when a woman accidentally hit her engagement ring out of her boyfriend's hand while he was trying to propose. It wouldn't be the worst thing in the world, except for the fact that the proposal went down on a literal boat—so the ring was slapped into a river! As the boyfriend freaked out and jumped into the water to look for the diamond, the girlfriend sat motionless and speechless. While it's very entertaining, we only hope this couple recovered the ring! And let this be a lesson—proposing by the water might not be the best decision.
