Wedding welcome signs are about more than just a photo opportunity—they’re a way to welcome guests to your nuptials and communicate that they are in the right spot before the ceremony begins. Additionally, welcome signs can help establish the overall theme and style of your wedding decor, and can include important information like a schedule of events or the direction of your ceremony location. It's also an opportunity to convey requests for cell phones turned off, cameras stowed, or voices hushed.

“When designing welcome signs, I first consider the overall look and feel of the other paper goods, specifically the wedding invitations,” says Kathy Marcelle, a wedding and event stationery designer. “Having a cohesively put-together celebration brings meaning to your event and sets the tone for the occasion by serving as a visual storyteller,” she adds.

To help you find the best one for your event, we tapped experts for their expertise and tips, including what a wedding welcome sign should say and what to consider when ordering one for your big day.

What to Look for in Wedding Welcome Signs

Function

According to wedding planner Jenny McDonough, a wedding welcome sign isn't just pretty decor— it also needs to serve a function of directing guests with clear and simple messaging. And, in addition to welcoming guests, it’s a great place to communicate additional information about the ceremony or requests from the couple.

Jenny McDonough is an Aspen-based wedding planner and owner of Stargazed Weddings and Events.

Size

It's also important that guests see the sign right away so they know where to go. “The sign should be large enough to catch the eye,” says McDonough. While it all depends on the space you’re working with, she recommends going no smaller than 18x24 inches and no larger than 24x36 inches.

Materials and style

“Many simple signs are made by mounting the printed design on foamcore. This provides a sturdy but light piece that will sit comfortably on an easel,” says McDonough. “A printed design can also be placed in a beautiful frame that compliments the wedding decor,” she adds. In addition to these types of wedding signs, other materials include hand calligraphy on a mirror or vinyl on a sheet of stained plywood or a bold neon sign.

Think about your overall palette and wedding style when choosing a sign. Make sure that the colors and design mesh with the decor aesthetic of your wedding, advises McDonough.

FAQ
  • Do you need a wedding welcome sign?

According to Marcelle, a welcome sign is important for the flow and feeling of your wedding. “It officially welcomes your guests to your celebration,” she explains. “A branded welcome sign is also helpful when your event is in a venue that could have multiple weddings going on at the same time,” she adds, noting that it will help ensure guests that they are in the correct location.

  • What should a welcome wedding sign say?

A wedding welcome sign can say a variety of things. You can include more romantic messaging like “welcome to our forever after,” or make it more personal with your names and wedding date. “A welcome sign can also be informative by serving as signage that helps your guests know where to go", says Marcelle. "It also can help explain the timeline of events, including the ceremony time, cocktails, dinner, and dancing,” says Marcelle.

  • How big should a welcome sign at a wedding be?

“The size depends on other variables, such as the number of guests or the overall space,” Marcelle explains. “A large sign in a smaller space would be overbearing, whereas a smaller version in a larger area might get lost,” she explains. When in doubt, the most important thing to consider is that the sign serves its purpose and is large enough to be legible.
