If you’re planning to display and serve a wedding cake on your big day, know that you have plenty of options available to you. While your wedding cake flavor and design get a lot of attention, it's extremely important to consider where you'll purchase your confection from. Depending on your aesthetic preferences and budget, you might choose to work with a professional wedding cake baker, tap your venue's in-house catering company, or purchase a cake from a local grocery store.
If you're thinking about the third option, which tends to be the most budget-friendly, you'll be pleased to know that a number of grocery stores offer custom cakes through their bakery departments; Walmart just so happens to be one of them. The large chain has stores across the world in 20 different countries, which may make it an incredibly convenient choice for couples planning celebrations across the world.
Here, we share everything you need to know about Walmart wedding cakes; use this handy guide to decide if it’s the right choice for you.
Walmart Wedding Cake Options
If you already shop at Walmart, there's a good chance you’ve tried their cakes before; those celebration cakes you know and love can also be customized for weddings. If you’re hoping to display a tiered cake at your reception, you'll be pleased to know that Walmart offers two-tiered cakes constructed with a 10-inch tier as the base and a 6-inch cake on the top. These range in price from $68 to $74. Couples can choose from a treat made entirely of white or chocolate cake, or they can mix and match and have both. The two-tiered cake will serve 68 guests.
Walmart sheet cakes also work well for weddings, and they're a great way to save money on dessert. Many couples opt to display a beautiful cake for cake-cutting photo but ask their caterer to serve slices of sheet cake to guests. Sheet cakes are available in flavors including white, chocolate, marble, and yellow cake and range in size from full sheet cakes, half sheets, quarter sheets, and eighth sheets ranging in price from $16 to $69. These serve anywhere from 12 to 96 guests depending on the chosen size.
If you’re hoping to add a filling between your cake layers, strawberry and Bavarian creme are available. For the exterior of your cake? Choose from buttercream icing, which has a thicker texture or a lighter whipped icing. The whipped icing has a similar texture to whipped cream, but it can withstand being left out at room temperature. You can choose to use either icing for the exterior of your cake depending on your flavor, texture, and decoration preferences.
Planning a dessert table? You can also pick up cupcakes from Walmart in either white, chocolate, or a mix of the two flavors. Cupcakes can be filled with strawberry or Bavarian creme filling and topped with buttercream or whipped icing as well. This is a great option if you’ve opted not to have a traditional cake and are planning to put together a spread of individual desserts.
Walmart Wedding Cake Designs and Decorations
Not sure where to start on cake design? Walmart’s lookbook includes a number of designs for two-tiered cakes and sheet cakes. You can opt for rosettes decorated in buttercream, white pearls, sugar flowers, or buttercream flowers. If you prefer the look of something simpler, you can also choose to order a two-tiered cake and ask for it to be iced but left undecorated. That way, you’ll have a blank slate to dress up with florals to match your wedding’s aesthetic. Just be sure to ask your florist for additional flowers to adorn your cake.
How to Order a Walmart Wedding Cake
It’s always best to order your wedding cake with plenty of notice ahead of time. While we advise finalizing your cake at least four months before your wedding day, there is a bit more wiggle room with grocery store cakes. Order a Walmart wedding cake between 30 days to one week before your wedding. Place your order by consulting the bakery in the store, calling to place your order, or even using Walmart’s online custom cake ordering system.
