What Happens at a Rehearsal Dinner?

What to expect at the "party before the party."

In This Article

While there are certain traditions that can be skipped to suit your personal needs, scheduling a wedding rehearsal is one custom that should always be considered when planning to say "I do." That's because practicing walking down the aisle will not only ease your nerves, but will also make sure you, your partner, and your VIPS are all on your A-game come wedding day.

Another benefit? Wedding rehearsals are typically followed by an exciting meal, also known as the rehearsal dinner. A "party before the party," this special dinner is a way to kick off your celebration and bring together your close friends and family before your nuptials begin. It's also an ideal time to host any speeches and toasts you'd like to have that aren't scheduled to be said at the reception.

For those currently planning a rehearsal dinner, we put together a simple list of all the essential moments you'll need for an unforgettable event. Read on to learn more.

Dinner

Whether you're having dinner with just your immediate family or inviting your wedding party and some friends, it wouldn't be a rehearsal dinner without, well, dinner. As for what type of dinner to host, Kerri-Lynn Orsini-Mulhearn, owner of Stella Day Events, a full-service wedding and event planning company, recommends family-style meals to keep things close-knit. "While we love a cozy seated dinner, family-style service has been trending these last few months and guests are loving it! It creates a less formal and more family-orientated feel," she shares.

Want to make your rehearsal dinner extra special? Consider hosting a themed celebration. "Whether you are having a Mexican fiesta, a clam bake, or Mediterranean, we encourage clients to have fun with their menus," says Orsini-Mulhearn. "Live music is always a bonus. It's the kick-off to a great weekend, might as well start with some fun!"

Gifts

While Orsini-Mulhearn recommends distributing gifts to your wedding party and your parents the morning of the wedding (before getting ready), if you'd prefer to hand them out prior to the big day, then the rehearsal dinner is a great time for this moment. "It's not always necessary to hand out gifts, but if you plan to do so, make them practical," the wedding planner adds.

Toasts

Break out your box of tissues because rehearsal dinners are a great time to schedule those heartfelt toasts. "Typically, the host of the party will give a welcome toast to kick off the party," shares Orsini-Mulhearn. "Once that happens, we encourage the speeches to flow organically with an 'open mic' feel. Give your bridal party, family, and friends a heads up before the event, that if they'd like to say a few words, they are welcome to. Encourage them to keep it between two to three minutes!" What's more, for anyone who may want to present a roast instead of a toast, the rehearsal dinner is the more appropriate venue for some good-natured fun.

Dessert

Traditionally, the groom's cake is served during the rehearsal dinner for guests to enjoy. However, you can serve other types of desserts like cupcakes, pies, and ice cream treats. The options are truly endless!

Before everyone heads home for the night, make sure to give them a quick refresher on the next day's schedule, including any important timeline details or last-minute changes.
