What do Kate Moss and Kate Middleton have in common? They both chose to outfit their bridal parties in beautiful white dresses. Fast-forward to now, and white wedding party dresses have become one of the hottest bridal trends. But while white bridal party dresses make for an undeniably fashion-forward look, how can brides wearing the same hue ensure they’ll stand out on their wedding day?

The key to embracing and executing this coveted trend is to pick bridal party dresses that look distinctly different from your own wedding gown. Heather McReynolds, a bridal dresses and accessories expert at David's Bridal, recommends incorporating color into your wedding gown. Brides are loving wedding gowns in champagne hues or other non-white yet neutral shades like pink, blush, or cashmere.

"Another option to differentiate the bridal gown from her maids is through texture and embellishment while bridesmaids wear a solid fabric," she says. "This option offers unique accents and depth to the bridal gown adding a little extra pop."

From casual knee-length dresses to formal A-line gowns, we researched the best dress options with these features in mind. A few of our favorite finds include the Reformation Juliette Dress, the Amsale Eden Dress, and the Jenny Yoo Lorena Dress.

Read on for the best white bridal party dresses to complement all bridal styles.

Meet the Expert

Heather McReynolds is the Vice President and General Merchandise Manager of Dresses, Bridal, and Accessories at David's Bridal.

What to Look for in White Bridal Party Dresses

Style and Shade

"As with all bridesmaids' looks, you want to consider how it will complement the entire bridal party look, especially the bridal gown," McReynolds advises. "Also, think about the way the gowns will photograph. If your bridal gown is ivory or off-white, think about how the bridesmaids' dress shade will look next to yours."

Aesthetic and Vision

"Beyond those considerations, you’ll want to think about your wedding aesthetic and vision. We love a mix-and-match bridal party look. This gives your best gals the option to choose a dress that fits their body type and personality and still delivers a stunning cohesive look," McReynolds says.

FAQ
  • How can I make my wedding gown stand out beside my bridesmaids' white dresses?

"One trend we’re seeing become very popular is this shift away from the pure white gown. Brides are beginning to incorporate unexpected colors into their gowns for a chic and dramatic look," McReynolds says. "In fact, non-traditional colored gowns now make up about 10% of our assortment (about a 30% increase from last year). One out of four brides are choosing a gown in champagne or other nonwhite-but-neutral hues such as pink, blush, or cashmere. Black wedding gowns are very popular in our assortment as well. Adding a color to your bridal gown is an elegant way to stand out next to your maids in white."

McReynolds also recommends going with special textures and embellishments to make your gown pop. "Think 3D floral appliques, lace, or intricate beading. You can also mix white/ivory with shades of champagne for a unique neutral palette for the bridal party," she says. "By adding a neutral color palette, you can mix and match your maids to help differentiate from the bride and add subtle romantic touches to the bridal party."

  • Which dress styles are best for black-tie weddings?

"For a black-tie wedding, we recommend a long/floor length style as is acceptable for this type of affair," says McReynolds. "Beyond that, be sure to consider the event aesthetic, season, venue, etc. Black-tie weddings are often more formal so fabrics like high-shine satin, charmeuse, or stretch crepe emulate an elegant look for the bridal party."

  • Which dress styles are best for semi-formal and casual weddings?

"For semi-formal or casual weddings, the same considerations apply—event aesthetic, season, venue, etc. Fabrics like mesh, chiffon, and jersey may be more appropriate for this type of event," says McReynolds. "As for length and silhouette, you have a bit more flexibility in choices—short or long are appropriate, and mix-and-match silhouettes are a fun and playful way to honor your besties’ personalities."
